MID CENTURY MODERN: A Return to the Classics

As the saying goes: everything old is new again - fashion, furniture, design, and the arts are no stranger to this. Naturally we weren’t surprised to see that the Mid-Century Modern movement was back. It is a style originating from the 1960s; characterized by slim silhouettes, low profiles, and straight lines. The Neo Mid Century style we see emerging today is gravitating towards a cleaner and more minimal interpretation of the original. We have prepared a little inspiration mood board to help you get excited when using the Mid-Century Modern style.

In today’s blog, we are featuring Toscana from our Veneto Collection. This collection boasts wide planks at 5.5” and 6.3” width. This collection is inspired by the mid-century movement, showcasing simplicity and functionality at its core, perfect for all spaces.

Toscana is a beautifully neutral toned floor, making it an excellent choice for any and all applications and any type of decor. It is the little black dress we all have in our closet that is so versatile! We paired it with bold colours which is also a big trend in 2021 to contrast with the lighter, soft accents. In this case we went with Italianate AF-215, Vintage Taupe 2110-70, and Aegean Teal 2136-40 from Benjamin Moore. Three totally different colours between them but once combined work so well together. The pure, deep, clear Vintage Taupe, creates a striking combination with the blend of blue-green and gray tones of Aegean Teal, creating a natural harmony and adding brightness with the terracotta tones Italianate offers.

The living room inspiration started with the Hailee 84” Genuine Leather Sofa from AllModern. This couch is the perfect staple piece to add to your mid-century modern space. We complimented it with a recycled, graphic and minimalist rug, Array Handwoven Recycled Rug. This area rug is durable enough for high-traffic areas and is from CB2.

Another trend that you can’t miss is cane/rattan furniture. These natural materials are lightweight and add warmth and lightness to home decor and can work both indoors and outdoors. That said, we chose a not-so typical coffee table; Amina Round Coffee Table from Lulu and Georgia, that has an airy, organic vibe thanks to its open-weave radial design, and the natural beauty of the raw, unpolished materials.

Keeping up with the raw-natural materials, we picked an accent chair from Anthropologie; the Laurel Lounge Chair that is characterized by an exposed frame and elegant curves. We couldn’t miss including plants in our space; they add life, colour, and make everything fell cozier and lived in. In this instance, a potted Snake Plant is a go-to for the mid-century style. The planter featured in our mood board can be found at Bouclair.

When it comes to lighting, we decided to add some sparkle with the Armstrong 6 Light Chandelier, the perfect Mid-Century Modern chandelier that can be found at Kichler. This chandelier features a sputnik design with adjustable arms allowing you to customize the light for the right look. We finished off the space with two art prints — Soft Shapes IV & V

made by City Art and can be found at Society6.

What do you say? Are you into this look and ready to get started, or running the other way?
